The Société d’Études du Romantisme Anglais (S.E.R.A.), an academic society created in 2009, continues the tradition of the “Centre du Romantisme anglais”, initially founded by Prof. Christian La Cassagnère, and based in Clermont-Ferrand and later transferred to Lyon and affiliated to the CERAN.
Despite being quite young, it has been growing very fast over the past six years under the impulse of its founding member and former president Prof. Jean-Marie Fournier (2010-2014), and its current president, Prof. Caroline Bertonèche (Université Grenoble Alpes) elected in September 2014. The society has also greatly benefited from the energy and erudite knowledge of late Prof. Roger Chazal (emeritus professor at Vincennes-St Denis-Paris 8), whom we would like to pay tribute to.
The society aims to become France’s leading national organization for promoting the study of (British) Romanticism. It seeks to promote trans-disciplinary approaches to the Romantic period, ranging from literature to the history of ideas, aesthetics and the human sciences.
With a constantly growing number of members, the S.E.R.A. acts as a hub for scholarship by supporting conferences, disseminating news and events, providing prizes to early career researchers, and establishing links with sister organisations in France and abroad.
The S.E.R.A. is affiliated to The French Association for English Studies (SAES) and to the European Society for the Study of English (ESSE).
